How do you set up an online store?

How can I set up my own online store ...?

  • ... without using a third-party site? I know about using eBay, Zazzle, CafePress, and the alternatives. What I'd like to do is include a webstore as a part of my site. Can I buy software/code that lets me set up a display page, shopping cart/order form, payment setup, etc.? How complicated, generally speaking, is that sort of software/code to implement? Would I be better off having someone else install it, or can I learn how to do it myself? Either way, about how much would it cost?
