Starting a small business. need ideas?
-
Alright so, i have already decided on starting my own business. I want something that i can start out small and then expand when it starts to grow. All i need is an idea of what kind of business to start? any suggestions, ideas, help? It would be a offline business, but i would, of course, have a website also. Things i like/am passionate about:: Horses, Hiking/Camping, Baking, Scrapbooking... but i am the kind of person that, if i do something a few times, i start to like it. So anything would really work... It's always been a dream of mine to run my own business. the area where i will be opening my own business is in Jacksonville MD, which is very populated with equestrian riders. I was thinking about maybe opening a business that relates to horses (my biggest passion in life). But, there is already a small tack shop there... However... I've been in their tack shop, and i really wasnt too thrilled about it. They had a small selection, and there was NOTHING western at all. Don't get me wrong, its mostly english riders around there, but there are still some western riders like myself. Is it ok to have 2 tack shops in the same general area?

Answer:
www.sba.gov has info on starting a business. Also check with SCORE (should be a link on SBA website). They can help you at no cost. I don't know much about tack shops, but if you don't have any business experience I'd recommend starting out with a direct sales/network marketing business. You can learn some of the basics of running a business with hardly any risk and if you have some success can use the extra cashflow to finance a "traditional" business. If you want more info email me and I can suggest some opportunities that are at least worth looking into.

Two tack shops in the same area would not be a problem...especially if your shop offers a different product line (western) or more services than the other shop. A friend of mine was so excited when her tack shop added a service washing and repairing horse blankets. If you are thinking of starting small, you could start with the washing & repairing service, add some retail, and then expand into an actual shop.
