Answer:
I have taken college courses on communication and have experience with talking to oncologists and surgeons concerning my wife's breast cancer treatment. When somebody in authority talks about how you are going to survive cancer YOU listen. Of all the styles mentioned above what comes closest to what a cancer patient experiences with doctors would be focus. You want to focus on the cancer itself and why chemotherapy is necessary for survival. Of course once the the patient realizes and understands the reasons they MUST do chemotherapy then the other forms of communication can be utilized. But believe me the doctor's do NOT spend time with your feelings (none that we experienced) they say how sorry they are for you and they will state your realistic survival rates based upon your treatment options BUT they DO NOT deal with your emotional feelings about treatments. What they would do is refer you to a professional for the emotional support you may need. Those people then would utilize all the communication techniques you have mentioned above. In my wife's cancer treatment I took a class on communication, it was called, "Helping Her Heal" and it was a six week course covering talking to your spouse about their feelings and emotions about having cancer.
