I have heard about many unconventional approaches to cancer treatment. But I cannot think of how this would help except for one approach. And this would apply to a very narrow range of cancers. If you had a tumor that was external, like an erupted breast tumor or a skin tumor on the surface, then exposure to ozone's reactive oxygen species (ROS) or commonly referred to as "free radicals" could theoretically have a killing effect. The technique would require isolation of the area by some means, building up an air dam of sorts to isolate the generated ozone and keep it away from other body parts and the lungs. If I remember correctly, some use has been made of this type of treatment for wounds that would not heal. Can't recall seeing that it was effective or not effective. Many biochemical processes that increase the amount of ROS in cells, like overproduction of ATP through the electron transport system (ETS) in the mitochondria, could be harnessed to be therapeutic with cancer cells if the increase in ATP production could be limited to those cells. Dr. Jerry McLaughlin has done work with the class of molecules called the Annonaceous acetogenins, which are partial inhibitors of the first protein of the ETS. He believes that this inhibition causes an increase in hydrogen peroxide in that place inside the mitochondria and results in damage to the mitochondria membrane, releasing cytochrome C, which through a cascade of caspases results in activation of p53 and subsequent death of the cell by apoptosis. He believes that these acetogenins affect many cancer cell types much more than their normal tissue counterparts because of increased insulin and insulin-like growth factors in cancer cells by a power of 17 in one case. Dr. McLaughlin's lecture about his work is available online. He is retired from Purdue's School of Pharmacy and received funding for his work there from NCI and others with 13 years of RO1 grants, the toughest ones to get. He received the Tyler prize last year for his work from the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP). Their journal is The Journal of Natural Products, co-published by the American Chemical Society. ASP is the same group to which Mansouk Wani is a member. He is the co-discoverer of paclitaxel, widely used today in cancer treatments.
