What are the symptoms of lung cancer?

My husbands step father was diagnosed with lung cancer, if symptoms are there what stage you think he has?

• He is 72 and has smoked for years...He has had bronchitis since before thanksgiving and has lost about 35 lbs as well since then. 2 weeks ago he quit his job because he is so out of breath moving from room to room in his house, The cough and fatigue wouldn't go away, and was having pain and pressure in his chest. Went to the dr and got a chest xray and they say cancer. 2 days ago he had a CT scan and the Dr. said it was not in early stages because of the symptoms. Just wondering what stage he may be in and how long he may have to live so I can prepare my daughter and be prepared for the whole thing. This whole waiting game the past few weeks is killing my mother in law. Not sure even what to expect with radiation or chemo...
