Does this look like a bruise?

Is it possible that a BRUISE could look like a LUMP on mammo?

  • My mom recently hit her breast very hard against a door. 2 or 3 days later she had an appointment to get a mammo and they found a very small nodule in her breast (4 mm). A few days later they called her back for a sonogram which they were going to send to a surgeon. Then about a week later they called her again and said that the pictures they got weren't good and that they would need an additional mammogram which she's going in for tomorrow. My mom has a suspicion (and she's praying to God that it's true) that the nodule they found was a bruise that she got from when she hit her breast...which would explain why they need so many pictures. Could this be true, or is it impossible? Does anyone know? Thanks!

Yes it is possible however they will look at several things. The ultrasound (aka sonogram ) shows how vascular a nodule is. Bruises, fibroadnomas, and cysts are not veined ( vascular). Cancers are highly vascular. Clotted blood found in a bruise is reabsorbed into the surrounding tissues. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. My diagnosis happened in a very similar fashion. I was referred for a mammogram by my Dr. A day later the radiologist called and asked me to come in for an ultrasound. I stood beside our radiologist as he read my ultrasound. The tumour and the blood vessels feeding it were highly visible. He told me that there was a high probability that it was a cancer since most cancerous tumours are highly vascular. Thats why they are not mobile. However the definitive answer is found by biopsy.

A bruise is coagulated blood from burst capillaries which has gathered under the skin. She should have informed the doctor or radiologist what happened when the mammogram was done. As it is, they may do another and she should tell them when she goes in. It's not impossible because a clump of cells is a clump of cells, no matter what kind they are.
