Check engine light 1997 grand am?

What does the check engine light on my 1997 Toyota Tercel mean?

  • My 1997 Tercel has the check engine light on. The mechanic says that the codes it's throwing are random misfire or piston 1 misfire. We have replaced all spark plugs, wires, both coil packs, and the cam shaft sensor and the car is still misfiring it seems ONLY when idling and runs smooth once driving. I have no idea what to do at this point and i'm out of money. Spent about 600 on this already and smog and registration is due in a week. Any idea what is wrong here? I've seen the check engine flash for a few seconds twice in the past couple months. I hear that a flashing light is really bad :(

  • Answer:

have you checked the o2 sensor or made sure the catalytic converter is working correctly? and did a mechanic check to see if it was going to pass smog?

compression/leak down test would prove a burn/cracked valve, ring issue, or compromised head gasket associated w/ the #1 jug. head gaskets can be bad w/o cross contamination of fluids and or back fire upon deceleration. they can simply leak to the atmosphere. it could even be a leaky/fauly injector. or an itermitant wire/ground issue somewhere. even an emmissions issue. watch this self help vid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_uJ2aLcnzQ generic and a little techy, did all those parts test bad? why is a mechanic arbitrarily replacing parts? did they read the plugs? those can speak volumes. go to another reputable ASE shop or the dealer. the mechanic you're seeing is just costing you money. imo, that mechanic doesn't look at environmental possibilities. checks codes and replaces parts w/o testing. bad monkey. ------ no thumbs from me
