How do you break up with your girlfriend?

I moved to Australia to be with my single mom girlfriend - how do I break up with her?

  • I moved to Australia in October to be with my girlfriend, who I met online 10 months prior to coming here. She is a single mom with a daughter about to turn four years old. We are living together, and I am currently working a job that ends, due to visa restrictions, in mid-June. She believes that everything is fine, but unfortunately, I am homesick, miss my friends and family, and ultimately am not happy living here and with the relationship. I haven't been able to tell her my true feelings, because she is extremely emotional and would be crushed by the news, and also because it would be difficult for me to leave before I complete my job in June. She is selling her house (which she owns with her ex-husband), and expects us to find a rental together once this is done. I feel like a horrible, two-faced person for acting like everything is OK, telling her I love her, etc. This is augmented by the fact that her daughter has become quite accustomed to living with me, and because her parents and family have been so welcoming. My plan is break up with her in June and fly back to the states. How should I handle this? Should I break up with her and head to a hotel right away, or do I give her some notice? Do I say goodbye to her parents before going? Or do I just have my bags packed, break the bad news, and head to the hotel/airport? Am I a bad person for going along with the relationship until then? Please, any advice would be appreciated.

so you want to pretend to be in a relationship just so you don't lose out on a free place to stay? yeah that is kinda jerky, if you don't want to be with her, then break up with her and find something else until your visa expires.

what a sad story... if you don't want to be with her you gotta tell her, and you can't be in the kitchen or the living room.

If it true explain that the work restrictions on your visa make it impossible for you to stay long term in Australia. So this means you have to at least tough it out to June and then return to the US. Does your friend understand that the VISA you have does not allow you to work long term? Explain this to her that because of this you have to leave. Explain that because of this Visa she should not be making plans to include you after June. Explain this promptly and blame the visa (and not the fact that things are not working out for you). Perhaps this a lesson for you about online relationships!
