Regarding the apparent obesity problem?

Is obesity a social problem?

  • I'm doing a newspaper for my health class where i have to write several articles about social problems that affect teenagers. I've got: pregnancy, drugs, alcohol and i was thinking about obesity but i'm not sure if it is a social problem. So, is obesity a social problem? PS: if you know of other social problems that affect teens i would really appreciate it if you shared them with me. thanks :)

    Definitely. Fat people are a problem for all of us. A 'growing' problem one could say. They constitute visual pollution, that is, they aren't very pleasant to look at. Then fat people naturally don't do too well in the dating game but no one likes to be alone so fat people marry, have kids and these kids are just as fat if not exponentially fatter. In a planet already suffering from overcrowding they are taking up more space than they are entitled to. We live in a world of finite resources and they require extra material for clothes and shoes and so you can see why it's perfectly fair for airlines to charge them double or not accommodate them on the plane. And it's a disability in many cases and the government has to support the obese in terms of health care and disability benefit. So definitely a social problem. In fact, it's such a 'big' problem that even though most obese people stay in the house, the problem literally pours over onto the streets, like a belly over a waist line. When they need to move, valuable public resources are wasted with the fire department being called and in our failing health system when we're lucky to be able to see 'one' doctor if we have a serious problem, they require the simultaneous attention of 2 or 3 and again we pay for it. So, yes, it is definitely a social problem.
