What's the formula of gauge pressure?

How to get water pressure uphill approx 1000 ft?

  • father put water line up hill to cabin and had water pressure up there. father passed away. water was connected from pump house. gauge is saying about max pressure on gauge. son did something in pump house. dont know what. was a tank(air tank??) hooked to it also? i turn on water up the hill and just a tad bit comes out then stops..is there a water leak somewhere? whats the best way to check or fix the problem.

There are a few things you can check. First is if the pump is a surface ( jet) pump you have to be sure it is primed. Next would be if the pressure tank is swamped with water you would experience a lack of pressure that far away. You would shut the pump off, drain the tank down of water, and then open the valve back up so the pump creates a cushion of air in the tank pressurizing the line. The last thing to do is see how the pressure is right at the well house. If you are getting good pressure there then you can eliminate two things: the well has gone dry or the pump/motor is shot. If you have a submersible ( in the well) pump, hope that the tank will re-pressurize after draining it and all is back to normal. If none of these work you will have to call a plumber.

I don't think you mean 1000 feet uphill. I think you mean uphill and 1000 feet horizontally. Water pressure is a half pound per foot of rise. A 1000 foot rise would mean 500 PSI water pressure at the bottom, which is a lot. It sounds to me like you just need a mechanic to come and fix your system.

is there a pressure tank at the cabin? it looks something like a water heater. there should be a pressure Gauge attached to it. you might need to add air to the pressure tank. there should be a fitting on the tank to add air it would look like the same thing on a car tire or a bicycle tire. it should say on the tank what the pressure needs to be. 1000 ft. is a long way. you might need to install another water pump mid way in the water line. have a well pump guy come out and look at it would be the best thing. you could follow the water line from the pump to the cabin and see if there are any wet spots, that would be a leak.
