Lyme disease help?

Lyme Disease?? Help.......?

  • About a 1 1/2 years ago I was walking through a garden bed in my back yard in the dark. Something bit me and it hurt like hell. Because it was dark I did not see what bit me. It got very swollen and stayed that way for a while. It felt like some kind of bug bite. It was very red and swollen with one small "hole" in the center. I never did go to the doctor. I just thought it might be a fire ant bite. Anyway, I have had many of the same symptoms of Lyme disease in the past year. I have been to several different specialists in the last year because I thought my symptoms may be caused by other issues. However, doctors cannot find anything wrong with me. I live in the South (South Carolina) where I have heard that ticks that carry Lyme disease are very rare. Also I read that the tick has to attache itself to you for 24-36 hours before it can give you Lyme disease and I certainly don't remember seeing anything like a tick. Is it unlikely that this may be Lyme disease? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

An infected tick MUST attach itself to you for a minimum of 24-48 hours to transmit Lyme's disease. Lyme's is extraordinarily rare in much of the USA. Also, if you have had disease symptoms for a few weeks, a Lyme titer would most certainly rule out Lyme's disease. Be careful what you read about Lyme's disease on the internet. It has become the subject of "ambulance chasing" "doctors" aka LLMD's. These "doctors" will take your money to treat your unfounded symptoms, which they will tell you are caused by a chronic case of Lyme's disease. They will also tell you how inaccurate blood testing for Lymes is. Beware as they DO NOT have your best interests in mind.

Tick bites don't hurt the way you described the bite you received, so if you got Lyme disease, it wasn't from that particular incident. There is a blood test for Lyme disease, so it can be definitively confirmed or ruled out. Usually when docs run a bunch of blood tests and have ruled out autoimmune problems or infections, they might then consider something like fibromyalgia. If you have not had your blood tested for Lyme disease and autoimmune disorders, that would be the next logical step.
