How important are majors in college if i want to go to med school?
-
i'm interested in pediatrics but i know that comes after med school and residency. i'm currently a senior in high school signed up as an english major. i love lit and all that good stuff, buti'm starting to wonder if i should just switch to biochem. i can take pre-med classes as an english major too can't i? it'd be great to hear some advice so that if i really should change to biochem, i can do it now before the summer/fall

Answer:
You can apply to medical schools with a degree in any field as long as you take the required prerequisites. You don't need to be a science major to take these classes or to get into medical school.

Happiness is not something you can buy with that fancy job you'd get as a doctor. Instead you should do what you love which you seem to have implied is literature. I don't know your full situation of course. If you indeed do have a passion for bio chem, and eventually medicine, then go for it! And to answer your question: yes that is the type of major you'd want for med school. Although I don't think that is a strict requirement. Most hard sciences are probably acceptable. English is going to highly lessen your chances.

Med schools won't be impressed by an English major even if you have the pre-med classes. Everyone else applying to med school will have backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, etc. You will stand out and not in a good way.
