How to prepare for a lectureship interview ?
-
Hello I just received my first invitation for a lectureship interview in a UK university. All I know is that there will be 2 parts - Part 1 : presentation about my research followed by questions - part 2 : formal interview I would be very grateful for any advice on any relevant aspect (especially from people who have been to such interviews). Many thanks

Answer:
The presentation could be considered in two ways: i) an academic presentation of your research and how it would fit into the department's existing research profile and strategy; ii) as the basis for teaching material to a particular year/level of students. Before you decide which, read through the invitation to see if there are clear hints about the approach. Look on the Department's site to get their research profile clear in your head. Consider calling the person identified for "informal discussions". Ask this person about the role the successful applicant would expect to take, the balance between teaching and research. This may help you to direct your presentation, and may also help you prepare for the interview. Read recent copies of the Times Higher Ed. Supplement (THES) to get a picture of recent issues, and to look for news of the department/uni. Depending on the institution, you may be expected to take on administrative responsibilities, or make funding applications. I would expect a sensible Department not to overload you with teaching in your first year - worth checking what this would mean in terms of workload. Ask about support for a PGCHE, the teaching qualification for HE, there may be an in-house course and/or mentoring programme. good luck
