What kind of jobs are available for an anthropologist?

What jobs can an Anthropology Major get after college?

  • Answer:

Very few jobs, partly due to low turn-over, that is trained anthropologists seldom retire, and keep their old jobs forever, what else can they do, lol? Mostly you have choices of being a college teacher, that means you need to have a Doctoral degree in your topic, OR, you may luck out and actually get hired as a low paid "intern", helping another anthropologist do some study in some third world country or jungle. If you do not know people already "in the field", it will be very difficult for you to be selected among dozens of candidates for any good job opening. The Federal Govt often funds some studies in old cultures, and may hire you for some project, but again, we are talking about just a few dozen job openings versus thousands of people who would hold degrees in anthropology. Many people get them, not for the work, but just because they have a strong interest in the subject, and are "amateur" investigators, or writers. They may also hold other, more practical degrees, like Science, or Business. If not hired as an instructor, are you willing to travel, and live in strange places, often far from large towns? Studying human cultures isn't always done in air-conditioned offices, you know? But, good luck, anyway.
