INTERMOLECULAR?

Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding question HELP !!?

  • For which molecule in each of the following pairs would you expect hydrogen bonding, in a sample of the pure substance, to be more significant as a contributing factor to the attractive intermolecular interactions? 1. (CH3CO)2O or CH3CO2H 2. CH3CO2H or C2O4H2 3. NH3 or NH2OH 4. NH3 or H2O I know H is suppose to bond with either O,F, or N but what about the more complicated molecules like (CH3CO)2O or CH3CO2H ? How would I determine which one has a greater intermolecular force? How do I draw out the Lewis structure?

  • Answer:

    1. CH3CO2H - it has H atom attached to an electronegative atom 2. C2O4H2 - it has 2 H atoms attached to 2 oxygen atoms 3. NH2OH- Oxygen is more electronegative than nitrogen 4. H2O again H is attached to O which is more electronegative than N
