Why is lead used in a storage battery?

Why can't a lead storage battery be recharged indefinitely?

  • Why can't a lead storage battery be recharged indefinitely? A direct current must pass through the cells. The electrodes lose lead sulfate. It is difficult to reverse the direction of current flow. The electrolyte is too expensive. Thank you so much! i have such a hard time with chemistry and if you could maybe explain a little that would be amazing!! ill give best answer.

  • Answer:

The electrodes lose lead sulfate. Once the battery is fully charged, all the lead sufate has left the plates. further charging current just disassociates the hydrogen and oxygen in the acid solution, "boiling" away the water.

The plates get coated with lead sulphate, which is a white precipitate. There are commercial tablets to recover batteries who's plates have "sulphated up" but they only work for a short period of time. General plate degredation will also add to the demise of the battery although a transfusion of fresh electrolyte will add some life to the battery, after flushing with distilled or de-ionised water to get rid of sulphate and other impurities in the battery.

Plate deterioration and breaking down. The acid would still be useful.
