What are embryonic stem cells?

What are the differences between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells?

  • This question is actually two related questions packed into one question, so please answer them both. 1. ) What are the differences between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells? (Besides the fact that one comes from an adult and the other one coming from an embryo) 2.) What are BOTH the advantages AND disadvantages of an adult stem cell when it's compared to an embryonic stem cell?

  • Answer:

    1. The main difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells are that adult stem cells are differentiated already. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent that means they can develop into anything, a skin cell, liver, ear, etc. 2. Knowing this you can probably guess the advantages/disadvantages. The advantage of the adult stem cell over the embryonic stem cell is that adult stem cells come from adults. Why is this an advantage because it avoids the controversy of taking stem cells from an embryo. And that way avoid killing an embryo that could develop into a baby. The disadvantage is that it can only develop into whatever you took it from. By this I mean if you took it from a skin cell, it will only develop into a skin cell not a hair cell or anything else. It is not pluripotent like an embryonic stem cell that can give rise to anything because it isn't differentiated yet Hope I helped. Best of luck!

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/OFTcW True (ish). Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent and can become nearly any type of cell. They are not able to form extraembryonic tissues so technically they are differentiated a little bit, but they are usually referred to as undifferentiated. They are not totipotent which means they can become any type of cells. Zygotes are totipotent. Adult stem cells are multipotent and partially differentiated.
