If you enter the lottery by choosing 5 different numbers from a set of 45 numbers, how many...?

  • If you enter the lottery by choosing 5 different numbers from a set of 45 numbers, how many ways are there to choose your numbers? What if you have to also choose one more number from a separate set of 31 numbers (like the "Powerball" lottery)? How many ways are there to pick all of your numbers if you include choosing this last number?

  • Answer:

    If the order doesn't matter: C(45,5) = 45! / (40! * 5!) = 1221759

1. 45*44*43*42*41 = 45!/40! ~ 146 million 2. 45*44*43*42*41*31 = 31 * 45!/40! ~ 4.5 billion
