What Connections Are There Between Number Theory And Partial Differential Equations?

Which do you think would be a more difficult elective, Number Theory or Graph Theory?

  • Number Theory: Properties of the natural numbers, congruences, diophantine equations, and elementary arithmetical functions. -Prerequisites: CALC3 & MAT300 (Intro to Proofs). -Textbook: Kenneth H. Rosen; Elementary Number Theory and Its Applications (sixth edition) ISBN13: 9780321500311 Graph Theory: Colorability, connectedness, tournaments, eulerian and hamiltonian paths, orientability, and other topics from the theory of finite linear graphs, with an emphasis on applications chosen from social, biological, computer science, and physical problems. -Prerequisites: CALC3 & Intro to Linear Algebra. -Textbook: G. Chartrand, L. Lesniak, P. Zhang; Graphs and Digraphs (fifth edition); CRC Press, 2011; (ISBN-13 978-1-4398-2627-0)

  • Answer:

I personally thought that number theory was more difficult than graph theory, but that might have been because I thought graph theory the more interesting of the two. Sometimes what is more difficult depend on what holds your interest the most, since both courses demand a strong interest in delving into maths. Also, I saw more real life applications where graph theory background would be used. Number theory is important, but I think that is more of a subject that one takes because they indeed love number theory, or have to complete it for their degree.
