What is the song here?

What song should I use as an audition song for Hairspray?

  • A local theater group is doing Hairspray. I'm looking to go for Penny. I'm looking for a song to sing that is Rockish yet Musical Theatre. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to check them out! Here are the guidelines: 1. Select a song from one of the following categories: - A song from a Broadway or movie musical which is pop or rock in style. As you listen to songs while choosing, if you hear “violins and flutes” in the accompaniment, it’s the wrong song. If you hear “guitars and drums”, it’s the right song. - A song in the style of early rock, classic, or pop-rock. - A song in the style of early, Motown-style Rhythm & Blues. If you choose this R&B style, it must be from the PRE-HipHop era. If you sing from a Broadway or movie musical, do NOT sing from any of the following shows: “Les Misérables”, “Aida”, “Children Of Eden”, “Rent” or “Grease.” Your song must be up-beat. Please no slow songs. We want to hear you ROCK! 2. Be prepared to sing the standard “audition version” of your song, i.e. 16-32 bars, or 1 verse and 1 chorus. 3. Stay as “age appropriate” as possible with your song. While I realize that most songs from musical theater, as well as rock and R&B, are written to be performed by adults, there are still many which are appropriate to be sung by young performers. We don’t need you to audition with songs about your failed marriages, your years spent in jail, your drug addictions, etc. THANKS A BUNCH!

  • Answer:

Sticking to songs from actual musicals, my recommendations would be: "O Bless The Lord" from Godspell "Suddenly, Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors "Buenos Aires" from Evita Other musicals to pull from would be "Hair," "Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Spring Awakening," and "The Wiz"
