I have a singing problem.

Singing problem or anxiety problem?

  • I've never had problems singing before and i have been in many musicals. I have a belting voice, and my friends say it is natural. i have never had lessons before, but choir teachers and other mentors say i seem to be singing right. however someone told me about vocal nodules recently and lately i've been paranoid of having them or damaging my voice somehow. occaisionally my throat feels really tight, as if someone is choking me, and it gets worse and worse the longer i sing. my throat also feels very dry and i can't seem to drink enough water. I have no troubles swallowing or breathing, i've been to the doctor and i have no thryoid problems. i was wondering if this sounds like i am singing horribly wrong or if it's something else altogether? Could it be anxiety? my throat seems to get worse and worse the more i think about it, and if i don't think about it or talk for sometime it goes away. my neck is also very sore. i have no hoarseness in my voice when i talk or sing other than when it is really dry. I just want some opinions. stress or singing wrong??

  • Answer:

I'd be willing to bet it is a combination of stress and anxiety. I was diagnosed with anxiety eight years ago, and anxiety can create symptoms that feel very real but are not real symptoms of illness or medical problems. I'm sorry you are going through this, but remember that it is just anxiety, and you can sing wonderfully even if you do have anxiety. You have a natural talent and a beautiful voice. Most of the things we worry about never end up happening, and it isn't worth putting yourself through the worry, fear, and stress. When you are singing, do your best to get into the moment, think about what you are singing and how it makes you feel, get lost in your singing and truly enjoy your passion! Slow deep breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth can really help you, but the deep breathing can take some time and practice to really get down, but once you get it right it can be a really relaxing and soothing. When you start getting anxious thoughts take a deep breath and remind yourself that it is just the fear. It is much easier said than done, but you have to try and stop negative thoughts and thinking too much about vocal nodules, because you were right, the more you think about it, the more anxious you will become and the more your symptoms will increase. When it isn't on your mind, you will be less anxious and your symptoms will start to go away. Make sure you stay away from looking up too much about vocal nodules on the Internet, because you can stumble across things that actually make you think about it more and make you more anxious. Keep singing, you are a natural!

You're focusing on a singing problem, and your body is reacting. The mind is a very powerful thing... if you think about something enough, you can actually convince your body to react as though it is happening to you. This is why many people will "feel sick" when their friend does; they start to think about the symptoms, and they start to read into it and think they have it too. My mother in law does it all the time. If I have a cold, she thinks she has one too. If I am tired, she suddenly starts feeling tired too; and she's genuine. The brain is actually tricked. You need to stop thinking about the nodules and start focusing on how much you enjoy singing. You don't have a voice problem; you have an anxiety problem than can easily be solved by simply distracting yourself. Whenever you start to think about it, immediately think about something else that is positive. Retrain your brain so it does not send danger signals to your body, hindering your ability to sing. Listen to music you love and get lost in it; forget about everything but how much you love the music. Sing along and enjoy yourself! :)
