How to get a deep, raspy singing voice?

What happened to my singing voice?

  • I sing and play guitar pretty frequently--not for long periods of time ever, but pretty often. I've never had a fantastic voice, nor have I had any sort of training, but over the past year it's been getting better as I've been learning to hit notes and stay on key consistently. About two weeks ago I recorded a song with my friend, which took a while, it had us singing for about 8 hours straight. At that point I felt like I sounded the best I'd ever had and like I was learning how to sing properly (and no, my voice wasn't sore or anything afterward.) But after that day, I pretty much didn't attempt to sing at all. Last night and tonight I've been trying to sing again, and it sounds awful! It's not, like, raspy or anything, the tone is ok, but I'm having serious difficulty staying in key, especially with high notes. It's worse than it's been in a long time. I thought I just needed to warm up, but after an hour of trying last night I didn't improve at all. It's almost like I forgot how to sing. I feel like I can't do it anymore, even though two weeks ago my voice felt better than ever. What happened? How can I get my voice back?

Sometimes when you're singing for long periods of time you don't notice the damage you're doing to your vocal chords. So the next day is when you get that shock. The best thing you can do is rest your voice and drink plenty of water (not cold, not hot). Give it a few days to fully recover, then slowly work your way back through scales/songs etc.
