Chances of acceptance to a music school if GPA is low?
-
I'm a junior in high school looking at colleges for piano performance. I've already visited a couple of universities and met with piano professors and I have noticed that the details of the application process vary with each school. A growing concern I have is my academic standing. I take rigorous courses, but have an unweighted GPA of about 3.4 and I'm worried that won't cut it for some of the schools I'm interested in. I’ve been told that it may have little to no affect on the decision, and also that music applicants are often considered “separately, but equally,” to the rest of the applicant pool. I've included a variety of schools I'm considering applying to next year. If you have specific information on ANY school’s application process, can attach a link to another helpful thread/forum/website, or can share experiences you've had, I'd appreciate it! Answer:
Jacob's School of Music at IU is VERY competitive. With a 3.4, you could probably get into IU, but no guarantee on Jacob's. If someone around here tells someone that they were accepted to Jacob's, they get kind of an "Wow, you must be so talented!" reaction.

All universities want a well-rounded person. I'm an aspiring Harvard/Yale-student and I know way too much on this kind of stuff. All universities want leaders so think of any events in high school that showed leadership material. Also think of challenges you have overcame. Since you want to go to school foe music skill/talent will matter more than grades. So all I can say is be good at whatever you do. As grades go always push yourself. Tell them you challenged yourself to the hardest classes possible and honestly tried your best. I'd also like to throw in playing a musical instrument is one think colleges love. So if for some reason you choose not to go to school for music, it will show another college your dedicated and talented.

For a good number of music schools accepting first year undergraduate students, they will look only at your musical abilities through auditions and theory testing - Possibly a personal interview. As long as you are accepted into the school, most music departments will not look any farther into your academic history, save your college GPA. That being said, don't be too hard on yourself... A 3.4 might not be the greatest, but it is certainly enough to get you into a major university provided you have decent ACT/SAT scores.

I'll tell you, and give you the simple and short straight-forward answer. Music programs or a school that has a prevalent music program, like a lot of the ones you've mentioned, look 90% at your talent and potential. If you kick but in the audition, they won't care what your high school GPA was/is.

Your grades really aren't bad. Your PSAT/ACT scores are good, and colleges really like to see you taking a vigorous courseload with a slightly lower GPA than an easy courseload and a high GPA. I don't think your academics will be the deciding factor in your admissions process if your auditions and other applications are good. Some of your schools are very competitive, so I'd make sure to keep your grades up and get the best possible scores on your SAT/ACT.
