Covering letter for a job application?

Job application - covering letter....?

  • this is going to sound completely daft....but in truth I haven't had to apply for a job in years!! So....I have to send my cv with a covering letter for a job as a part time office clerk. What would you put in the covering letter? I don't want to ramble...but there are gaps in my cv that I should explain....should I do that in the letter, or wait to see if I get called for interview, and tell them then? Thanks a lot for any answers :-)

    If there are innocent explanations for the gaps in your CV (e.g. 2004-2007 you were a stay-at-home mum), then I'd put them in your CV - it saves time and they won't question it. Think of your application as a brochure for a car. The CV is the detailed technical specification, the covering letter is the blurb to convince you why you should buy it (essentially that's what they're doing: buying your service). Detail your skills and why you're suited to that job - and why you're the best candidate - what have you done that made you stand out previously, etc.? But you're right - keep it short.
