What major should I go into?

What should i major in if i want to go to law school?

  • i am currently double majoring in juvenile justice and youth advocacy as well as performing arts. i am minoring in communications. i want to go into law school and from there become and international lawyer. my school just introduced a new political science and global studies major. should i make my new major political science and global studies with performing arts and then have juvenile justice as my minor? or should i keep it the way that it is? i know that a lot of people major in polisci in order to go into law school but i heard that schools want diversity from their students which makes me think that juvenile justice and youth advocacy is the better major. please be detailed in your response! i really really appreciate your help.

Law schools (not Harvard) would be happy for a degree in underwater basket weaving and a high GMAT score. Law schools want students who can think critically, which is why political science is popular. My lawyer was a english major, another was Physiology, another was engineering. So juvenile justice is a good major. But international law is more about contracts. For many lawyers in private practice, it is what come in the door. You have a client with one type of problem, you spend a lot of time figuring it out. You now advertise and get more clients with the same problem.

I assume you mean best to do well IN law school, and not to get into law school. Most law students/lawyers will tell you that there is no particular major that is "best" for law school. However, social science majors tend to do well, these include history, english and political science. In law school, you will be reading hundreds of pages of material, most of which was written fifty to seventy years ago. You will need superior reading comprehension skills. These majors provide them. Science, philosophy, engineering, and math majors do well because they can understand reasoning and logic. These skills are essential in understanding arguments which is what lawyering is about. I would say to go visit a law school and ask the admissions counselor to provide more information.
