Why is Ps3 internet not working?

Ps3 ethernet connection problem?

• I finally managed to connect my playstation 3 to the internet through an ethernet connection. I managed to sign in to psn and download a few game add ons but eventually my laptop was no longer connecting to the ps3. I still had access to the wifi but my ps3 did not have the connection from the ethernet. The ethernet cable has been plugged in for many years into a dormant router and i decided to use it for my ps3. It worked perfectly fine until it stopped all connection to my ps3 mid download. Could it be the ethernet that needs to be changed or is there another problem? When the ethernet cable is plugged into my laptop the port lights up like it is working, but there is still no internet access to my ps3.
