Riedell skate sizes aren't really "equal" to a shoe size - skates need to fit the SHAPE of your foot, not just the size. There are varying widths, as well as the fact that every brand is shaped differently - Riedell shaped skates may not even be the right shape for your feet. Because of this, you need to go and get fitted at a pro shop. They'll set you up with skates that fit properly. Jackson and Riedell are both excellent brands with great beginner/recreational skate models - there isn't a "best" skate, and neither brand is "better". Just make sure you spend at least $100 on your skates - anything under that will probably be junk. Which model depends on your level, how often you skate, your height, weight and (of course) foot shape. Another good reason to go to a pro shop - they can help you choose which model to buy. You can't go wrong with Riedell or Jackson skates - both are equally good. It's just that some feet fit one brand better than the other - their heel cups and stock widths are slightly different. You really have to try on skates. As for the sizing, shoe size and skate size are two different things. You really need to be measured and fitted by a professional. Each brand of skates has it's own measurements - Jacksons run a little larger/wider. Most important: make sure the fitter measures your foot length AND width. A lot of them just assume everyone has "average" width feet and since Riedells run more narrow than Jacksons, it becomes an issue. Also, never let them convince you to buy a larger size when you really need a wider width. Too-long skates are a misery on the ice, causing trip falls and making turns and spins really difficult. Have them order the proper size and width for your feet, even though it means a second trip to the pro shop. Well-fitted skates are worth the effort. Now's a good time to buy skates, there are a lot of sales. Make sure to get measured and fitted by a professional so that you don't have to worry about incorrect sizing and extra services for adjustments/sharpenings. Ask if they have any deals going on; some rinks have been bundling rec skates with their group lesson program signups. A good pair of recreational skates costs less than $100 and is the only required piece of equipment in skating. Don't cheap out.
