England rugby league team?

Rugby League question?

  • Hi, I live in the south of England (near Bath) and I have played Rugby Union for 5 years now, on the flank or in the centres. However, I've had an interest in Rugby League for about three years now, and recently a club has been set up near me, and I'm thinking of joining. However, the club doesn't have an U16 team, or any youth teams. Instead it runs an "open age" team, which it states is for 16+. I'm worried I'd be too small. considering I'd be playing against fully grown men? I'm 5ft 11, and weigh 69kg (11 and a half stone). So would I be "too small", or would it be fine?

No but you would probably have to adapt and change position. To play with men u would not be strong enough to play center but u could easily play wing. If you are fast which is most likely you might play fullback at a pinch or because of your size could play halfback five eighth or most likely hooker. This all depends on your ball playing ability. But in saying that if you have good footwork and the ability to find holes you might be able to play lock or center. It would all depend on the coach and what is best for the team.

there's no problem with you playing, but starting off, given your size, you would probably need to play hooker or one of the halves (if you have good skills).. just try to stay away from the big men, or have a big team mate in defence with you that can help you defend when big guys are running at you.. the more you play, the more your body would grow into the game, and in time you wouldnt have a problem with size of the other guys no matter how big or small you are

Pretty sure Matt Bowen used to weigh about that when he first joined the NRL.
