Which hospital in Philly is most expensive?

Can my doctor affiliated with one hospital send me to to a different hospital for a medical procedure?

  • I have some "minor" upper abdominal discomfort. My Gastroenterologist (that works for a medical center and a major hospital) ordered some blood test, an upper abdominal Ultrasound and an upper GI Endoscopy procedure. I did the first two (blood and ultrasound) in the hospital of this medical center but I cancelled the endoscopy because I have a high deductible and the cost for this procedure at this hospital is very high. I will be paying over $6700 (and this is the member rate savings). I could have this procedure done at another hospital and only pay about $1400. Can my doctor (Gastroenterologist) send me to the other hospital to have the procedure done there so I could save money on this procedure? My gastro works for a major hospital in my city, this may be the reason why it is so expensive. If possible, I want the endoscopy done at a more affordable hospital and results send to my Gastroenterologist. Is this possible?

  • Answer:

Your gastro doc should help you get the test done without breaking the bank. Just be aware he may have to refer you to someone else. Call the office and tell them about your insurance. Many insurance companys also have staff to help you.
