How do I get into university in America? Please help :(?
-
Hi, I'm a 15 year old girl from northern Ireland and it's always been my dream to be a doctor in America. I've always got top grades and I do extra curricular activities (im a competitive swimmer) and I earn a bit of cash as a swim coach. Please can someone tell me how I'd go about getting into university/medical school in America? And if you're american, what's it like there? Please, any help would be really appreciated!!

Answer:
Medical school can cost over $45,000 per year after completing a 4 year Bachelors degree ($30,000-$50,000 per year). I don't think the bit of cash you earn will be anywhere near the amount needed. There are no scholarships for medical school. Few US medical schools accept international students. http://www.naahp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=2559

You need a four year Bachelor degree and take the MCAT exams before you can apply to any US medical school. VERY few international students get accepted into US medical schools. Some medical school do not take any international students. Undergrad school is going to cost your at least $30,000 per year. Medical school is going to cost at least $40,000 per year for tuition alone. For undergrad school - to earn your Bachelor degree- you need your A levels and take the SAT www.collegeboard.org

Well it all depends on what university you want to attend each university has different requirements. What you could do is research on the university you want to attend and look for foreign students requirements for admission. Hope this helps. As for your second question, I do live in America but im only 18 so I havent really experienced to many of America's wonders but im sure it has its wonderful areas just lik any other country.

The US is a bigger country than Ireland, so the geography and climate are very diverse depending upon which state you go to. There are the Rocky Mountain areas through Colorado, Montana, etc. Alleghenies (a little more like Ireland) just a bit west of the east coast. Big cities: NY, Chicago, LA, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, etc. And or course, snow in the northern states between Dec and March and warmer weather the further south you get. International students in the U.S. will pay about $35,000 to $45,000 per year tuition only for each of the 4 years of a Bachelor Degree. That’s right - a Bachelor Degree takes one year longer in the U.S. so it is 4 years, rather than 3 like in Ireland. Most Universities will require you to take the SAT test (Scholastic Aptitude Test) - And, once accepted to a school, you will need to apply to the U.S. Consulate for a Student Visa. With a Student Visa, you are allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week at an “on-campus” job. Swimming is a big sport in the U.S., and a lot of students who are really good can qualify for a Sports Scholarship to compete at the University level (and help pay for tuition). It is competitive, though. Once you complete your Bachelors, you can write the MCAT exam for Medical School Acceptance - Med School is an additional 4 years in the U.S. Then, any medical specialization is further study, and you will have Internships and Residency. All-in-all, 11 to 12 years to become a doctor.
