What is an American 2-year college degree equivalent to in the Netherlands?

In general, an associates degree would not help you get into a European university. You'd either need 2-3 AP exams or more to get into a European uni, or else you'd need to try to get into an "Access program" or "foundation year" in the country you like, if such a thing exists there.

I hope I can help, but since the Dutch educational system is different then the American one I'm not sure. In the Netherlands there are different types of high school named: VMBO, HAVO and VWO. In general this means that with a VMBO degree you only have exces to MBO education (levels 1-4), with a HAVO degree you have exces to HBO education (level 5) and with a VWO degree you have exces to WO education (university/ level 6). A Dutch associate degree is a degree for people who have a MBO degree and want to start HBO education, so it is like in between level 4 and 5. If you want admission to a Dutch university you need either a VWO or a HBO degree. For some studies you only need the first year of HBO. It all depends on what studie you want to do.
