How to cut and then style fine but slightly wavy men's hair?

Ask for layering or chopped in style or something? Then what's the best product to use to style it like that? The stuff I use at the moment tends to be good, but flops quite flat after a while, despite my hair being pretty fine. It does sometimes go a bit frizzy as well. I'd quite like a product that gives me pretty decent hold, keeps the volume well (ie; doesn't go flat to my head), and offers a bit of shine to make my hair look healthier as well. Any ideas?
