My computer's Screen will not come up, why?

Computer screen wont come up?

  • So I'm no expert with computers, but I'm also no novice either. I built a desktop out of parts my buddy and I had laying around, and it worked great for a few months, then one day when I tried to start it up, the screen would not come up. Thinking it was the motherboard, I replaced it, only to have the same symptoms. The screen is working, it will come up with the "Please connect cord" message when unplugged from the desktop. The graphics card is also in working order so I am at a loss, anyone have any suggestions. ideas, comments?

You've got to provide more information if you really expect a useful answer. For instance: -does the computer pass or fail the power on self test (POST). If when you turn it on, you hear a series of beeps it is failing the POST, so write them down (for example: 1 short followed by 3 long beeps). Your manual should be able to tell you what the beeps mean (they are different for each manufacturer/BIOS). If you don't have a manual, be sure to give the exact make & model of the PC so we can try to look it up for you. -if it isn't failing the POST, do you see anything displayed on the monitor during start up? -does Windows attempt to load & hang? All this is important to diagnosing what's going on. Post an update & I'll try to check back. Update: OK, you say your system is passing the POST. & your monitor works. not sure how you know your graphics card is working, but if so that only leaves 2 possible problems: your video cable is bad (what kind is it? VGA, DVI, HDMA, what?) or you don't have it plugged in to the correct port on your computer or display. Verify the connection & if it still doesn't work, replace the cable.

I seen people do this many times: They have installed a video card and got it working, then at some later date, they unhook their computer and hook the VGA/DVI/HDMI cable back up to their intergrated graphics and wonder why the computer seems to boot, but nothing shows on the monitor and the monitor works when hooked to another computer.
