  Remove 1999 Cougar starter 1999 cougar starter. Stand at the left front fender facing the car. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.The starter is located below and to the right of the air cleaner. It is near the top of the engine at about the the two o'clock position. You need to remmove the air filter, box and bracket. On the automatic transmission model you need to remove the gear shift mechanism. That is a fairly large cable attached to the transaxle slightly to the right of the starter. It is held in by two bolts. Remove the two small nuts holding the "front facing you" of the starter to a bracket in front of the starter. Rremove the bracket. There are two fairly large bolts holding the starter to the engine. They are essentially verticle, not horizontal as you would expect. Remove the cables. (write down what cable goes where). Remove emmission and water hoses as necessary. You might want to remove the battery and it's retaining "plate". I did and it gave me more room to work. Good luck in wriggling the starter out. My daughter asked me why I held my tongue in a particular position. I told her that was the only way to get the starter out of her car. Also, it helps if you have small hands or can draft a kid with small hands to help. Do not use your daughter. She might break a nail. GOOD LUCK.
