Is it safe to rely on network connection icons at the notification area?

Weird "invisible" icons in the Windows 7 notification area (lower right corner)?

  • So, yeah. When I click that little arrow that's expands the notification area, it expands and takes up half the desktop. There are only 4 icons that show up. The rest is just a bunch of "invisible" icons that disappear after putting the cursor over it. Also, the little network icon (used for wi-fi, etc) in the same area has "disappeared", the space for the icon is still there, but I can't see it, and it doesn't disappear when I put the cursor over it. Has this happened to anyone else? Any -serious- advice would be appreciated. (No, it's not a virus, trust me)

  • Answer:

Download and install ccleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner right click on the takbar and select, task manager. click on the processes tab. now open ccleaner. scroll down to the advanced section of check box's on the windows tab. check every box in the advanced section but NOT the last two, which is wipe free space and custom files and folders. now in the processes in task manager find explorer.exe right click on it and click on End Process your taskbar will shut off. (windows explorer will shut down) Now click on Run Cleaner in ccleaner let it clean out all the crap. when it has finished. uncheck all the advanced box's and close the program. in task manager, click on file (top left), then on New Task (Run...) in the create task box, type in, explorer.exe then click on OK. if you see a box that says run this task as administrator, make sure you check it. when you have restarted the computer, the job is done. good luck. .

If you've ruled out virus then check to see if it may be malware or spyware. If you've deleted any malware or spyware make sure you deleted the root file of said programs otherwise they'll come back. Other than that i'd give some thought to the notion of software like a keylogger or other surveillance software. If that doesn't help then back up your files on a disk, as a just in case, and run a system reinstall/recovery. Or recover your system to an earlier time BEFORE the problems started. To recover go to the windows button then accessories then system tools and run system restore.
