Are common house centipedes dangerous?

Best pesticide for house centipedes?

  • I live on the first floor of a duplex. Last summer/fall we had quite a few centipedes and we've already seen one this spring. We do have a dehumidifier but we've got a damp, unfinished basement and the building is super old, so they just keep coming out! So I'm looking for a pesticide I can use. I've been reading some things about Ortho Home Defense and Diatomaceous Earth but can't find anything about a product (available in local stores) that specifically kills centipedes. Anyone have any suggestions? It would be especially great if it's something you've tried and seen work. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Look at the label of Malathion. It is a non-persistant insecticide that only lasts a week. Spray both outside and inside your hose where you have seen the centipedes. This stuff has a strong chemical odor that lasts about 4 hours so after use, leave the house for at least that amount of time. Open windows before you leave. Use the concentration amount as specified on the label which you should read completely.
