What is Dental Hygiene school like?

Should i drop dental hygiene school for nuraing school?

  • I was in a BSN program in fall 2010. I was having mixed feelings about the program to begin with. I felt I wasn't ready. It was my first time living out of my parents house. I got a little wild that semester and ended up withdrawing halfway through that semester. I went back to school that spring and took easy classes to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I was planning on applying to either an adn program or lpn program at a local community college. However, before I applied I found out I was pregnant. I ended up miscarrying. When I started thinking about school again, the deadlines for those programs had already passed so I looked into other programs. I chose dental hygiene at a college that is a little more than an hour drive from where I live. I am currently in the second semester of the five semester program. I am spending about $400 a month just on gas driving back and forth to school and work. I am failing my clinic portion of school right now because I cannot find enough patients to meet requirements. I have already applied to the lpn and RN program at a community college 15 minutes away. So should I drop dental hygiene for nursing?

  • Answer:

Hi I am a dental hygienist. I think it really depends on what you would enjoy doing most. It is easy to get discouraged and want to give up but any degree worth having is going to take some effort on your part. I did the opposite and dropped out of Nursing school to take dental hygiene. I have not regretted it even though I know I could have gotten through the parts of nursing school that I hated and found a good career in some area of nursing. Spend some time thinking about what you would like to do long term and then apply yourself and make it happen. Maybe you need to move closer to save time and money? Dental hygiene is a good career. I still work 2 and a half days a week as a hygienist and spend the rest of my time writing about dental health. Here's my story... http://www.gum-disease-cure.com/dental-hygienist.html
