Should I apply for my GED?

Will getting a GED instead of a High School Diploma affect my chances of getting in a good college?

  • I am 17 I dropped out when I was in Junior year & I had bad grades I slacked off a lot when in my freshman year & it ended up affecting me badly. Please someone give me professional help. I want to go into a good college but everyone tells I have to get a High School Diploma that people with GED's get into bad schools. No offense to anyone. Just need help because going back to High School will take me a lot longer to finish.

  • Answer:

you'll need your GED *and* a good SAT or ACT score. You have a decent chance of going to a good college if you can do those two things. if you can't, start in comm coll and transfer to a 4 year afterwards - once you have your 2year comm coll degree, the 4year college will be more interested in your grades at comm coll than they will be in your HS situation. contrary to popular belief, many good colleges will accept GED applicants but you'll need to wow them with something else like those test scores.

Many four year colleges accept a GED to apply. You are going to need to score well on the GED and probably take the SAT or ACT. Look at your community college for GED classes. Do you think you can handle college level classes? You may want to try a CC first. then transfer over to a four year college.

Yes, - few Universities recognize a GED. Some Community Colleges do, however, and most “For Profit” Training/Certificate Schools will. Your career options will then be limited, though. You can do high school classes online.
