If you compete in a sport with measurable statistics--track & field, for example, basketball, etc.--they you can compare your accomplishments against marks currently being set at Division I schools. For example, if you can run a 4:15 mile as a high school junior, look up the school and see what their milers are currently running. If you think you compare favorably, look on the college's web site under intercollegiate athletics for something called the "athlete questionnaire." If the college coach in your sport believes you're a contender, so to speak, he/she will contact you. Something to consider. Division I sports are highly competitive and relatively few high school athletes make the transition to that level. Let me suggest you also look at Division II, Division III and NAIA schools for possible sports participation, as well as junior/community college athletic programs. You won't win full-ride scholarships at these schools, but you'll be able to compete in your sport while possible receiving some tuition assistance. Good luck.
