Is genetics a hard college course?

Should I withdraw from this course, or scrape by with a C?

  • Here's the deal: When I first started college, I didn't take it at all seriously. I had an undeclared major, spent 3 years just to accumulate like 40 units, while having withdrawn like 20 classes (yes 20! classes). Of the courses I did complete, I got As and Bs (3.5 GPA for those courses). I finally decided on molecular biology as a major. I finished up my general education without dropping any other courses, and then moved on to my major courses. I've since aced every single science course of mine (from physics to general chemistry to organic chemistry to calculus to genetics to cell bio, etc.) and haven't withdrawn from a single class in the last three years. This semester is my second to last semester. I took on a huge load so that I would only have to take two classes during my last semester and spend more time doing research (to increase my chances of being accepted into grad school). I think I've bitten off more than I can chew! I'm working 20 hours a week and am enrolled in 16 units of all upper division hard science courses (molecular genetics, experimental cell biology, developmental biology, biochemistry, and immunology). I'm still pulling straight As in all my classes... except immunology. I've fallen so far behind and as it is now, If I average 95% on the next two exams, I can pull a flat C (75%), which is pitiful! Immunology is the one course I don't absolutely need for my major (I'm taking it as an elective), and I could always take my last elective course next semester with the other two courses I have left before graduation. Would it be best for me to withdraw this course as to not mess up my GPA, and to lighten my stress load, or given my past history with withdraws, should I just suck it up, get a bottle of adderall and just scrape by with a C?

  • Answer:

Scrape by with a C. I had a choice myself when I was in high school and that's what I went with. I was told that if I finished the class that they threw on me over half way into my final semester of my senior year that I would graduate with an academic honors diploma. I didn't need it at all to get a regular high school diploma. They wouldn't let me drop out of it. My refusal to take the course would have lowered my GPA. I had to pull two all-nights and an all-dayer, but I did it! I finished that class with a B! So, I think you should push through it so you don't have another dropped class on your record. Those don't look good even if your GPA is good. It can make people think that you dropped a class whenever you weren't doing well, and I don't think you want people to think that you're a quitter. Plus, aren't you or someone paying for all of this? Don't pay for any more dropped classes if you can help it!
