Marine life photography/videography career?
-
ive always been interrested in photography.. and ive taken a class.. i have my own dslr camera so i can practice for 2 years before i go to college.. i know its not underwater photography.. but its not like i can really practice that.. im sophomore.. im interested in marine photography/ videography.. i would love to go diving taking photos and videos. i was thinking about going to hawaii for college --convenient ocean-- i cant find anything on a career in marine photography.. i know i have to take marine biology.. but i dont want to necessarily study marine life.. i want to photograph it..so is there a major that says marine photographer in college? or do i go on my own taking marine photos..?how do i do that? are there like job offers for marine photography? like any other career... or does no one offer you money for it?

Answer:
I think the problem you'll have with any career as attractive as marine photography is that there are so many other people who will pay to do it that it's very hard to make a living. Only the very best and the most experienced can make money from it. I think the best thing to do is to get a solid career that finances the diving, learning UW photography, then see if you're good enough, or can find a niche, that allows you to go professional later.

I've not heard of that major specifically, but I would recommend getting in touch with your school's guidance or career counselor and seeing what resources they have. You can also do research on the websites of universities, both in HI and other seaside locations, to see what majors they have. I would stick to bigger universities when doing your research, since they are more likely to have more specific majors like what you're looking for. Doing a photography major with electives or even a minor in marine biology may do the trick.
