What does an environmental scientist do?

What would i major in to become a forensic scientist?

  • I am looking into becoming a forensic scientist. The ones that work in the crime lab and investigate evidence. I know its not like on CSI or NCIS already. I wanted to look into becoming a cop before a forensic scientist even tho i don't have to. The majors im stuck between are chemistry, biology, and psychology. Psychology because it cam come in handy when your a cop, and ive always been interested in the way humans think. Chemistry because that's the most common major for forensic scientist, its offered at a lot of colleges, biology to. I want a major i can fall back on if i don't become a forensic scientist and majors that i can further my education in like if i wan to change routes and want to go into the medical field(psychiatrist, radiologist, etc.) i know the career i want to do involves helping people and science. Please help!

  • Answer:

You can major in anything in college as long as you take the premed classes, and then you can go to med school. I'd suggest majoring in chemistry. You'll only need one psychology course.

There are many different kinds of forensic scientists, "the ones that work in the crime lab and investigate evidence". Depending on what you want to 'investigate', your choices of classes would vary. A forensic scientist might look at drugs, works of art, many aspects of car crashes, paper and handwriting, DNA samples, 'clean body parts' (frozen or mummified) or 'icky' ones, insect behaviour . . . and that's just a start. Just so you won't embarass yourself in the future, "forensic" refers to the legal aspects of a subject. For example, a forensic psychologist would make psychologically-based legal decisions; a forensic entomologist looks for legally-applicable information about insect behaviour, etc., etc. It would be wonderful if you could get a chemistry degree (esp. organic chemistry), with some courses in biology (esp. microbiology) and psychology (abnormal psych., of course), in such a way as to prepare yourself for law school, as well as med school. And please! don't neglect your reading and writing skills. No matter what you do, you need to be able to communicate. Maybe a philosophy course in Formal Logic. If you can find one, you'll never regret it.

Choose as your major what interests you most. That is what you will be doing for 25 or so years, so pick the one you like.
