What does it take to be an accountant?

What does it take to become an accountant?

  • Well, basically I want to become an accountant when I am older. I am currently doing my GCSE's, I would like to know: How Much GCSE's You Need to Pass... What Type Of A-Levels I Should Take... I want to be an Graduate Accountant so what type of course I can take... What will I do in that course... Other Options of What I Can Become After I Have Taken The Course... And all the other shizz for e.g. what is ACA, I heard it is a course you can take to be an accountant but I don't know if it has anything to do with graduate accountants... Also, after you have become an accountant what 'type' of job will you do at the start, how can you climb up the ladder to have a 'higher' accountancy job, the starting salary etc. I know this is a pretty big question to ask but I will be grateful if any of you will answer it :) Thank you...

I am a qualified Accountant - you need to get as many qualifications as possible to stay head of the competition. Would suggest Accountancy, Economics, Computing and Maths are always good subjects as they give you good foundation for business. ACA is Association for Chartered Accountants - probably the most prestigious accountancy qualification - there are others similar qualifications ACCA and CIMA. They all involve taking exams over two-three years/ It is better to have a good degree to give you a chance in getting into the big four accountancy companies on their excellent training programmes - PWC, E&Y etc. These places are very competitive. Starting Salaries probably around 16-22K mark. Money should not be a factor when starting - its should all about learning and the money will come afterwards, Climbing the ladder takes time and becoming a partner or director may happen only after 20 years of work (if it happens at all) Despite the negative perception of accountancy - it has been an enriching experience and have learnt so much as well as travelling the world in my role. To sum up - just concentrate hard on your studies - also the big four expect to see some leadership potential and good communication skills. Would also you try to develop interests outside education to demostrate your all round potential. Good luck.
