The GPS will still supply coordinates. Because Garmin doesn't rely on a provider like mobile phones, it can work outside of the reach of North America "services". You will, however, need the appropriate maps of the area, but those can be downloaded off the internet. Without the maps you won't be able to retrieve coordinates.
