What causes notchy shifting?

  • I bought a 1990 miata. The shifting is a bit notchy, so i assumed the transmission fluid and diff fluid should be changed as well as the fluid in the turret. Just seems logical. But i'm wondering if that is even the cause. What are the possible causes for notchy shifting in manual cars? Going from one gear to another isn't smooth and sometimes I have trouble putting it in gears like 1st and 2nd. I've read that it is possible the clutch slave cylinder could be bad. I just don't wanna change a multitude of things when all that needed to be changed was one thing. i don't have much money at my disposal

  • Answer:

"Notchy" is not a good description of any type of automotive problem that I've ever heard of. Sorry, can't help. However, if you take it to a qualified mechanic, I'll bet he can diagnose it .
