Is IPOP (International Presentation of Performers) a scam?
-
Look so my friend told me about this thing shes going to called IPOP where there is agents that you perform for to see if they like you and want to sign you(acting, modeling, singing, and dancing). It's basically like a talent showcase that happens twice a year in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I dont neccasarily think this IPOP is a scam but on the website i found it says you need training before you go to IPOP. AND theres a training seminar at ipop before the actual competition thing but you need some training before you even arrive at IPOP. My friend is doing "undiscovered talent group" training but some people ive heard are doing "john robert powers" which im pretty sure JRP is a scam but i dont know about UTG (undiscovered talent group) or IPOP (international presentation of performers{Which is the actual competition})??? Are they a scam.....??? My friend whos doing it her name is skylyn and she said its not a scam because her relative did the same training even though it was thousands of dollars, went to IPOP, got signed by an agent and is now acting in commercials and starting some films...So i dont know! Please if anyone knows info on most importantly if IPOP is a scam then if anybody knows where i can find some actual talent trainging before starting this???? I sing and dance somewhat ! Thank you so much!! I have been spending hours trying to find info on this but it is absolutely useless. I cant find anything.

Answer:
I can't comment on iPop specifically but can tell you about talent showcases like this in general. The reality is, maybe 5% of attendees will be lucky enough to get an agent, while 95% go home empty handed and a few thousand dollars poorer Almost all of the time the people who do end up getting agents are those who have YEARS of experience acting as well as training from top acting schools, so if her relative got signed by an agent then this person probably had been acting in school plays and community theatre for a few years and had been taking acting classes for a few years as well At any showcase, agents are not interested in beginners or wannabes. They are looking for actors who have worked locally for several years in school plays, community theatre, student films, etc and have taken a few years of acting classes and are looking to take their career to the next level If you have not had the leading role in school plays and community theatre productions for the past few years, then going to a showcase is not going to get you anywhere and you are basically killing your career before it starts. You will only have one time in front of these specific agents, and going without being prepared is the worst thing you can do. You are not being judged on your own merits at a showcase -- you are being compared against the 500 other attendees. If you have never taken a cold reading class, if you don't know what prepared monologues are, if you have not been acting on stage for a few years, then you are not going to get an agent no matter how much you want it

It's not a scam in the sense that you don't get what you paid for. However, it is a big waste of money. As Kittysue mentioned above, such a small percentage of performers will actually get representation while everyone else will waste their time and a LOT of money. (At least US$4,000 just to participate) And guess what? Even the performers who did find representation wasted there money as well! The fact is, any performer who is that talented that they would get chosen from the crowd based on the one minute they have in the showcase (if that) could get that same representation FOR FREE. There are talent scouts like myself (and the ones Kittysue mentioned) whose job it is to find that kind of talent, and we don't charge a thing...BECAUSE THIS IS OUR JOB. NEVER pay for an audition. There was a time, before the digital and online world, where showcases were the only way to get seen. This is no longer the case. Put your money toward training and your marketing tools (headshots, reels) and not just to have a minute on a crowded stage.

I just put my son thru the IPOP program in Los Angeles and can therefore speak with authority on this matter. Its a wonderful event and in fact it delivered far more than was promised to us. We would highly recommend attending. The only thing that was promised to us was the chance of being exposed to talent agencies and managers. That's it. Nobody promised us that our son was going to be the next Disney star and it fact it was made very clear to us that this was NOT their role. They can get you to the door - but your son/daughter has to jump thru it and to do that, they need some talent. The thing is - how does an ordinary person get their talented son/daughter in front 200 plus talent agencies and managers in the one place?? If you know another way - then lets hear about it. My son was picked up by an agency and we have been out doing auditions - but we understand very clearly that there are NO guarantees of success. Part is luck - part is talent and a lot comes from persistence. If you cant play golf and go to a golf academy and come out the other end not winning the US Open - then blame your lack of talent - not the instructor. Sure its not cheap - but go take a look a the venue, the agents and managers attending and then I think you will agree that if you can afford it - its a great investment in your son/daughters career. My gut feeling is that the people who complain are the ones who have unrealistic expectations that their child is definitely going to be the next Disney star & when that doesn't happen -they get bitter and twisted. We had a great time at IPOP and I would strongly recommend it

iPop isn't a scam. The people who didn't get it just say that because they think that they are good enough. iPop is a legitimate business and it isn't a scam! And of course they expect money! After all, they are a business and that's their purpose. But part the money goes into the hotel you book and the travel. And ipop doesn't 'guarantee' that you will get on even if they take you to LA. They're just giving you the opportunity and after that it's in your hands to impress the judges. The reason why it's terribly expensive is because they basically give you a ticket to LA and you meet 200 casting directors and agents!! They obviously expect something in return and the money also goes towards the event, hotel, training etc. iPop isn't a scam. It is actually a wonderful opportunity to show your capability to the 200 agents you will see if you get through!! :)
