Are French movies better at portraying the USA than Hollywood?

  • I get 3 French channels with my satellite service. American TV is nothing but Reality Shows now, so I stopped watching it. I only watch French TV now. I notice that on French TV, the USA looks more like the USA than it does on American TV. Whenever on a French TV show or Movie the plot takes place in the USA, you see almost everyone to be Hispanic. On American TV and movies, everyone seems to be White. American TV has the Black token guy, the Hispanic token guy, and the Asian token guy, but it does portray this illusion that almost everyone is White. On French TV and movies, sometimes the story is set in the USA. Whenever the story is set in the USA, you see mostly Hispanic people. The people on the background are Hispanic, the people they interact with are Hispanic. I think this closer to reality than Hollywood. Whenever you go to Wal Mart, everyone who works there is Hispanic. Whenever you go to a fast-food place, everyone is Hispanic. If you eat at a restaurant, the people waiting on you are Hispanic. This is what you see on French TV and movies. Hollywood doesn't want to acknowledge this reality, but France does. Are French movies better at portraying the USA than Hollywood?

    I have thought the exact same thing and I really think they do. I spent 6 months in France and their films as well as their tv captured the visuals and the essence of America more than hollywood ever has. I think the portrayal of our country has been so blurred and distorted by what hollywood believes should represent America rather than what actualy is. The french film industry is so far removed from what hollywood's "ideal America" is and they truly portray our country in it's entirety.

The US is huge and diverse. There are many many places that definitely look the way you describe the french movies but there are also many places in the US that are mostly white, mostly black, mostly Asian, mostly middle eastern as well as mostly Hispanic and so on. As well as places that have relatively even blend of many races. Also Reality TV tends to be just as scripted as an Hollywood film.

The USA is HUGE. It doesn't ALL look like Los Angeles. MOST of the US is made up of white people. However, most of the movies take place in LA and could use more of the under-represented hispanics. I agree with that. But that doesn't mean that France does a more accurate depiction of the states, it just means they have that one aspect right... about LA, not about the entire US.
