What do you think of this study by U.C.L.A?

Is this enough to get into UCLA or an Ivy League?

  • Hi! I'm currently a sophomore. I received 7 A's and 1 B (math analysis) last semester. (including extra GPA points from AP World History and Honors Chemistry) I dropped AP World because I absolutely hate history and didn't think that the stress was worth it for something that I don't enjoy. I know it wasn't the best decision ever, but I really hated that I never had time to focus on other subjects that I actually struggle in (specifically math). So this semester I'm in Honors World History (I can breathe again..) My extra curricular activities include the following: (and however many years I plan to spend with it) Journalism: Chosen as Junior Editor-in-Chief for next year. And plan to become Editor-in-Chief during my senior year. (10, 11, 12) Make-A-Wish Club: Co-Founder and Secretary/Historian. Planning to become Vice President next year since the current Vice President puts no time or effort into the club. (10, 11, 12) Friendship Circle: (hour and half with a child w/special needs; once a week). Was offered position as President next year. (10, 11, 12) Red Cross Club: 99% chance of landing position as Historian/Secretary on the Youth Executive Board for the West Los Angeles Branch next year. (10, 11, 12) I will find out in about two weeks if I got it or not! :) I don't play on any sports teams...okay I don't play sports period. I have two knee conditions (excuse) but I'm not going to risk anything that involves me having chronic knee pain for the rest of my life. I was also approved for "Seal Bearers" last semester. Which basically means that by the time I'm graduating, I will be on the NHS (National Honors Society). I'm also doing an internship with UCLA this summer for a research study. And I plan on getting straight A's this semester ( NO MORE AP WORLD WOOHOO ) Speaking of AP's. I learned last semester that I have to actually LIKE the subject..so I decided on taking only two next year which I know I will be successful in; AP Language and AP Biology. So...is this good enough to get into UCLA or an Ivy League? I've tried so hard, I really have. and I've done so much research on this stuff and I learned that the most important thing is to choose a few things and commit to them to the point where you achieve a leadership role! I know that so far I'm doing well...but I've read some of the most amazing applications online that I'm not sure anymore if I'm actual competition to other students aspiring to go to a good college. Oh and during my junior and senior years, I want to do this thing called "Mock Trials." Its only for the first few months of school (takes a lot of dedication though), but I would really like to get a little taste of what its like to be in court! And to add to this, I've also considered becoming a volunteer for TeenLine for my junior and senior years (a hotline for teens to talk to other teens about anything from suicide to bulimia). Thank you so much! Any bit of advice will mean the world to me!! :)

  • Answer:

Everyone applying to the ivies has the highest grades in the hardest classes and very high test scores. The only thing you mentioned that might make you stand out is doing research over the summer at UCLA. If you really impress the professor you work for and get a lot accomplished, that can really help your application to a top school. Otherwise, you'd be an average applicant at best.

Wow, you did mush better than me. You do high a High chance with all those activities you are doing especially UCLA since you an intern at their school. What are you majoring in? Make you classes focus on that major. I want to major in the Health Career. Wow, I mean seriously, you are amazing! Keep working hard and achieve goals. Ivy leagues are a pretty high chance and you pretty much made it with all those activities and grades :) Good Job!
