Are SATs really hard?

I did terrible on my SATs?

  • Okay so I am generally a good student in school. My gpa is 3.8 and I always do good in school. So when I signed up for my SATs I knew I wasn't trying to get into any hard colleges. Just the college in my hometown that isnt too hard to get into. So I didn't do any prep for the test I just woke up one morning and took it. the format of the test and how each section was timed took me by surprise. When I was finally done with them I knew I didn't do amazing but I didn't think I would do as bad as I did. So here are my scores: Math: 420 Reading: 430 Writing: 370 Total (not including essay) 850... terrible I know:( when I found out I was completely surprised. All my friends got at least in the 1000s and here I am with an 850. It's really embarresing. Now I want to know how I can improve. And did anyone else go into this test unprepared and get a score like this? Im definitely retaking them in June and my goal is to be 1010 or higher. I know that's a huge difference but that's what I am setting my goal as.

  • Answer:

The SATs are incredibly important to getting into and paying for college, so its pretty crazy you didn't study at all before the test. But don't fear because almost everyone takes the test twice. I got a 1700, but only because I studied (on my own) weeks in advance. It is totally worth it to study. The best SAT book for me in the Princeton Review, which costs around $25. Its definitely worth it to get a study book, or at least borrow one from a friend, it doesn't matter. (Don't bother with the $100 classes, everything you learn there, you can get from the test-prep books) When I read the test preps, I was amazed at how easy it was to raise my score, just by following their techniques, it felt almost like I was cheating. The SAT is a joke, that doesn't test a person's intelligence, just their ability to test-take. You can do it, so goodluck!!!

I have no concept of SATs, I think it as a test or exam. When i was a student, someone told me I can only got 50 if I set my goal as 60 and prepare for the goal So work harder than you did now.

You should be aware that there are colleges that do not require SAT scores from their applicants. Your guidance counselor at school can probably identify which they are.

Ouch... I'm in 8th grade right now. I took the SATs in 7th grade with no preparation and only half a year of pre algebra, and I got: Reading: 560 Math: 520 Writing: 510 I just took a practice SAT for math today, and I got a 670. So it's definitely possible to do decent without preparation and minimal math knowledge. I know a lot of people do practice questions and stuff, and I'm sure that will help you. Just wondering; what grade are you in right now? I know there are classes you can take in high school to prepare for the SATs, but I have no idea if you would have time.

I took the sats this march and also studied a lot. you can definitely get into your desired range, and since you took the sats for the first time, you were already at a huge disadvantage. All you have to do is practice for them, especially the math and reading sections. With the writing sections, there are tips and tricks that the SAT makers put into there, and you can learn them from the college board book, which is also called the blue book. I got a1920 but studied A LOT. Im going to take them again in may, and am planning to get above 2000. I have a gpa of 3.9, which is not much different from yours. Again, taking the SATS the first time was a huge disadvantage, and with some practice, your score will automatically go up. good luck!
