What is it like to teach high school English?

Why do you believe the public school systems in America mainly teach in English?

  • Answer:

I know this may seem offensive but English is becoming the world's language. The Chinese are studying English at an increased rate. The business world functions on English and most entertainment comes from the Anglosphere. The best question is why aren't all children everywhere learning English?

I believe they teach in English because it is the most commonly spoken language in the USA. If we were to adopt a second language, which one would it be? There are groups of people speaking 131 different languages in this country. Which one should be the second language? My Dad came here speaking Dutch - should he have insisted everyone around him learn Dutch, or should he, as he rapidly did, learn English? Edited to add: I think there is great benefit to learning a second (or third, or fourth) language. However, we can't simply choose a second language and decide that's the one *all* our courses will be taught in from now on - which one would it be? Russian? Mandarin? Spanish? Lakota?

My kids grew-up in a smaller rural town with a decent city school system. Our system had a French high school teacher & Spanish, also. The problem was $$$ - to afford the foreign language teacher, she had to also teach other classes besides the language. The system just didn't have enough need for a full-time single subject teacher. Luckily, she also taught something else, but I think our system was lucky to have her. Spanish wasn't the same problem, because Spanish wasn't that foreign around where we lived.

because it's the obvious choice - since the immigrants were too lazy to learn native languages. Being monolingual makes as much sense as running (or riding a bicycle) on one leg

It's just about state language policy....
